Final Thoughts on Videogame Month

Some conclusions from blogging at this point in my life on videogames:
1. Nobody else really wants to blog about videogames at this point in their lives.
2. I hate them all for it.
3. Not really, but come on, it's not that hard to vocalize your love or even hatred or indifference on the matter.
4. Above all, videogames must live on, because like all other things denoted as childish and killed off with the first submittal of taxes at the dawn of adulthood, they preserve our spirit.
5. That's not an overstatement. If anything it's an understatement.
6. Games are fun. Video or otherwise. Somehow sports slip by the security keeping videogames out of adulthood. Sports are amazing, and prove to be one of the very few things that's able to be preserved from childhood and accepted by society. The thought of grown men crying over some game they watch on TV being played by kids in college who've barely hit their twenties if that, is probably more acceptable in society than grown men crying because The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is just so damn hard without a strategy guide. And yet, in the video game scenario, they are actually physically affecting the situation as opposed to miles away from a game being broadcasted on TV. The fact that crossword or sudoku puzzles are considered an intellectual way to pass the time, but video games are immature and fruitless is a real shame. No offense to crosswords and sudoku, but video games are immersive and expansive. You occupy other worlds, become other people and entities, and you live other lives. I can't imagine how people one or two hundred years ago would react to suddenly being sat down with a PS3 controller, but I really don't they would think they would believe that it seemed like something only children should occupy their time with. And thankfully, due to the growth of video games and slowly more-accepting society, the age-range of videogame players is expanding.
7. Video games let people touch the other side of our consciousness. They breed problem-solving, logic, empathy, confidence, and creativity, not to mention hand-eye coordination. And their versatility and potential uses still left to be discovered are boundless. If anything, video games paved the way for generations to take to computers and cell phones like they were breathing air, but it is the video game that still embraces the individual's journey in their experience as one would listening to a song, watching a movie, or reading a book.
8. Games I'm looking forward to playing/beating: Windwaker (beautiful and fun, but Jesus, you think there's enough sailing?), FFVII, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid (yeah, I'm coming back for you time), SSX 3-I never beat you did I?, Knights of the Old Republic-I got a taste and I want more, GH1, GH2, GH 80s (you're welcome), Rock Band, Prince of Persia 3, Resident Evil 4, Jak and Daxter, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and whatever Edward tells me is good.

  1. 1.) I like blogging about videogames and plan to do more in the future. I still have that weapons list to do one day when I have more time.

  2. Yeah a moves list would be good as well, although I don't know if I have the guts to make another post so here's a quick list:

long jump in Mario 64 - incredible when we though the "Z" button was meant to be a hidden button.

the Superman tricky trick in SSX Tricky - essential

NBA Jam super dunks - see earlier posts

sidestepping in Goldeneye - the Rickerts probably started doing this in real life just to practice getting good times to get the un-get-able cheats of that game

1080 - 1080 Snowboarding. It never got old, and the voice was so damn encouraging as you heard the points rack up.

targeting and backflipping and jumping sword attacks - Zelda games

kirby's eating people - wild, trippy game(s) for the journies of many lives within one

upper-cut - Mortal Kombat. The best.

barrel roll - Halo, that double tap is so damn effective

spin dash - Sonic, unstoppable (except if there is spiky shit in front of you, which there often is)

stepovers - Fifa games. I love soccer.

double jumps - any game that gets you more air with no regard for the physics of jumping a second time in midair off of nothing

  3. 2.) It is amusing to me as well that is it "socially acceptable" (and "productive!"--you know who I'm talking about) to get obsessed with sports that you aren't even playing, but you're watching a bunch of other people you've never met and yelling at them to make your dreams come true, but videogames are considered "unproductive" and "immature," solely the domain of children. Now videogames are not my priority as you well know, but as I said, I always wish I had more time to play them. I might start playing FFVII this weekend, and if not this weekend, soon, so that we can go through it at the same time. I don't think FFVII is the best Final Fantasy however, despite its status as the most popular. I think purists would say one of the earlier ones is a lot better, and me personally, I think FFX and certainly others had better gameplay/stories. But it is a classic game and should be played, and I'd like to beat it.

Following your cue, I will list games I'd like to work on (by the way, way not to include GH3 in your list of games to beat!): Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Crysis (and Crysis Warhead), Super Mario 64, work my way through the Zelda series (perhaps beating the first one with some strategy guide help, I dunno), Shadow of the Colossus, God of War (and Co.), Grand Theft Autos III and Vice City (and San Andreas, which I also have--a little known fact--and actually I have IV too, haha), Dragon Age: Origins, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solids 1-2, Ninja Gaiden, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3, Final Fantasy VIII (loved it), Final Fantasy X, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie the day I move out, get Xbox Live, and download these puppies, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Dead Space, and of course many others. Unfortunately, these are all games I own but have not beaten (and there are many others). Let's begin our quest to beat all these games!

  4. In terms of moves, I think that Tony Hawk would have to be mentioned, although I forget what the best tricks were. I'm not sure I even know what a barrel roll is in Halo...is that a move with the flying vehicles? 1080's were often (or the 900 in Tony Hawk, which was not quite as often, but that was a big deal back then when only Tony Hawk could do it in real life--God do I ever love tricks in any sport...can we please, please, please play yo-yo again? We should make that next month's theme and watch as we slowly alienate every single person we know).

The Superman was a great Tricky trick because you could do it with practically no air. Who came up with the idea to always use that one? In terms of Mortal Kombat, no moves are more iconic than the "Get over here!" Scorpion move and Sub-Zero's free move, which Ryan seems to know by heart.
