Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

It's weird, but one of the best memories of video gaming was playing this with Edward and Daniel for hours and hours. It was always the same too. We would play horse on Canada and I would always lose. It's probably because I knew Edward and Daniel played it allll the time. I can tell you that I yearned for their praise. If I could do a trick and then manual for awhile and take it into another move, I would just about go crazy with joy. Of course, they did it every single time and just about raped me (probably because I was obsessed with Christ Airs and tried to do them anytime I could).

I can still remember all the groans and yells as Edward or Daniel would jump off a ramp, manual to a rail and kick-flip up to it, grind for what seemed like an eternity, manual again, go off of another ramp and do some special move, manual again, and somehow end up in the starting point- - racking up about 100,000 points. Typically, I went off the ramp and would accidently do a kick flip and end up getting a big zero cause I didnt land it, OR getting a gentleman's 25.

  1. ahahaha, "gentleman's 25." Yeah, basically Canada was all we ever played. When you find something that works, stick with it. That opening combo line, if you hit it perfectly, you could get over a million. To me, this was a far greater test of skill than other levels, where it was far easier to get into the seven digits. It was never easy in Canada, but for sure doable.

Also hilarious that you were always trying to do Christ Airs. I don't think I set too many grab special tricks, because they were basically pointless when going for big combos. It was all about special flips, manuals, and grinds. God, that game was addictive in an age before World of Warcraft and iPhone/Droid apps.

  2. Grrrreat game and incredible level. This level and that opening combo line in particular for whatever reason was all this game ever needed, and it was enough to occupy our time forever (not unlike Garibaldi in Tricky). And yeah, the special grabs were always funny and more novelties for us as we were so damn concerned with getting the revert, manual, grind streak going again. Although I will say I did set my special to barrel roll for some good times on my rare vert takeoffs. Horse is also a great game for multiplayer, because it forces the no-startover and concentrates on what the game was all about, combos and points.

I also remember us creating a level that was pretty shitty but still playing horse on it despite it all. And Jim, please post about the glory of the first Timesplitters. Wondrous times and hallowed videogame ground indeed.

  3. Yes, I do remember playing that created level at Jim's house. You're right--Horse is a slamming game. We should break that out again one day. I love how the longer your combo gets going, the scarier the balance meter is. If you were over a million, it started getting incredible nerve-wracking. This game defined what greed was about for this reason. It was so easy to have an insanely big combo going and fuck it up because you wanted more.

  4. I would like to know what the highest combo we posted ever in Canada was. Because, let's face it, it was about high comboes, not a two-minute high score. And anyways, if you had a good combo going, that would take up most of your two minutes.
