Swimming in Tracks: One

A cover my sister tipped me off to. The song's been played forever on the radio, but not by Cash. I'm pretty sure he released this one real late in his life, which gives it even more of a weathered feel than it already had just from switching Bono out for Cash.

Johnny Cash - "One"

  1. It is indeed a great song. And Cash did many covers late in his life of pop songs. I mean, it kinda had to be late in his life considering the U2 original is from the '90s.

Here's the question of the day: this song (in all its guises) versus Metallica's "One"?

  4. I really badly need to rewatch Magnolia. I saw that at a pretty precocious age. And to answer my question, I'd probably pick U2's "One"....maybe. Actually, that's pretty hard to say. I've heard Metallica's a lot more. But I never liked the hard ending of Metallica's. I never really liked it when they made their ballads hard at the end (such as "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," except for "Fade to Black," which does it exquisitely.

  5. Yeah, we all know which I would choose being well versed in metal...

    U2's "One".

  6. You might not be well-versed in metal, but by this point I think everyone is well-versed in Metallica's "One." In any case, if this were "Master of Puppets" or "Fade to Black" or several others versus U2, Metallica would win. And their "One" is a good song, but apparently not good enough.

  7. I heard U2's version on the radio this morning. Let me tweak my answer slightly. Cash's cover is definitely better than the original. I thinkt he ranking should go as such: Cash's "One">Metallica's "One">U2's "One."

For an even more fun challenge, try ranking the various "One Love"'s. One love...lol
